CHAPTER 12

When Sisk came into view, the half-starved children began laughing and cheering. A few of the others went ahead to take out any Dökkálfar before they proceeded. The townsmen celebrated having their village back from the evil witch.

The villagers took in the children and washed and fed them. Many came to Conner and the others to thank them and offer them gifts. They were asked to stay for a feast that night, which Conner agreed to mostly because of the effects of his wound. He found a vacant back room in one of the shops away from everyone to inspect the area Fedvena had embedded her nails. It wasn’t healing on its own, and it was oozing a weird black and green substance. On top of that, Conner was feeling ill, with fever and shakes.

“Conner?” It was Larry’s voice coming from the next room.

He didn’t want to worry her, but he knew she would keep looking for him. “Back here.”

Larry pushed back a curtain that was dividing the two rooms and found Conner sitting among piled crates. “What are you doing back here? What’s wrong?” she asked crouching down in front of him.

Conner carefully lifted his pant leg to show her the grotesque wound. “A parting gift from Fedvena.”

Her eyes widened. “The witch cursed you with dark magic.” She reached up and felt his forehead. “You have a fever. We must get you to someone who can help.”

“I’m not going to make it,” he breathed. “You need to find Marbank.”

“Who?”

“The wizard, Marbank. He’s probably the only one that knows what this is.”

She stood ready for the task. “Where do I find him?”

Conner shook his head. “I don’t know, but Finn might.”

“I’ll be right back.” Larry quickly went outside pulling Finn aside as the others continued enjoying themselves with the villagers. “What is it?”

“Fedvena used dark magic on Conner. He needs help fast.”

Finn set his cup down on a barrel. “Where is he?”

“He’s in the shop there, but what he needs is for us to find a wizard by the name of Marbank. Do you know where to find him?”

Finn began walking toward the shop. “He could be in any number of places,” he thought to himself. “The safest bet would be Yubick. Now that the Princess is there, he might try and stay close to her.”

“Then that’s where I’ll look first,” she said slipping her fingers into her riding gloves.

“Does Conner have that kind of time? Yubick is a two-day ride.”

“Who else is going to help him? These people don’t have much by way of healers.”

He nodded in agreement. “Take a couple of the others with you.”

Larry ran off and asked Klawn and Valr to ride with her. They borrowed some horses from the stable-hand and charged off as fast as the horses’ feet could run.

Finn entered the shop and found Conner sprawled out on the floor, nearly unconscious. He worriedly knelt down beside his shivering body. “Hey,” he gently rolled him onto his back, “Conner, can you hear me?”

“It hurts,” Conner gruffly breathed through chattering teeth.
